“Butterfly,” featuring Anupama Parameswaran, Bhumika Chawla, and Nihal Kodhaty in lead roles, has opted for a direct digital release on Hotstar. Here’s a look at how the film fares.
Story:
Geetha (Anupama Parameswaran), a Chartered Accountant, resides with her sister Vyjayanthi (Bhumika Chawla) in Hyderabad. Vyjayanthi, a leading criminal lawyer, is a single mother dealing with marital issues. She departs for Delhi on an important assignment, entrusting Geetha with the care of her children. However, the kids mysteriously disappear, leaving Geetha in a state of shock. She seeks help from her boyfriend Viswa (Nihal Kodhaty) to find them. The narrative unfolds with their efforts to locate the missing children.
Plus Points:
Anupama Parameswaran shines as the centerpiece of the film, delivering a compelling performance as a woman anxious over her sister’s missing children. Her portrayal is particularly strong during the climax, where her transformation is noteworthy. Anupama’s presence dominates the film, making it engaging.
The film becomes intriguing during the middle sections when the children vanish, with several subsequent scenes piquing curiosity. The background score is effective, heightening the impact of various sequences. The climax is intense, featuring well-executed twists.
The film also touches on the significant issue of challenges and violence faced by women, which is subtly highlighted through Bhumika’s character early on.
Minus Points:
The film’s major flaw lies in its screenplay, which lacks excitement and thrill. The theme of child abduction has been explored in many films before, necessitating a fresh approach to captivate the audience. Unfortunately, “Butterfly” fails to offer anything novel, resulting in a predictable thriller.
After some engaging moments, the story stagnates with repetitive scenes that drag the pace, leading to viewer boredom. The narrative often feels stretched without significant progress.
The identity of the kidnapper is easily predictable, diminishing the suspense. Character introductions are weak, with talented actors like Rao Ramesh having minimal impact. Bhumika’s role also diminishes in the latter part of the film. The frequent insertion of songs further hampers the flow.
Technical Aspects:
The production values are adequate, with the background score by Arviz & Gideon Katta standing out. The cinematography by Sameer Reddy is decent, though the editing could have been tighter to eliminate repetitive scenes.
Director Ghanta Satish Babu delivers a subpar effort, with a screenplay that fails to engage. The film is riddled with dull moments and could have benefited from a shorter runtime and more dynamic storytelling.
Verdict:
Overall, “Butterfly” is a conventional crime thriller notable primarily for Anupama Parameswaran’s performance. Despite a few interesting moments, the film lacks the elements needed to make it stand out and ends up being a mediocre watch for the weekend.
